Description
Some of the inspiration for this design came from my fondness for the traditional Japanese wood and rice paper lanterns called Andon. I wanted to explore a more organic shape and see how curves might work with a stretchable fabric shade. Though seemingly simple in appearance, this piece was fraught with technical challenges. The curving, hand-crafted pieces proved difficult to join as there were no flat surfaces and all joints had to be hand-scribed and fitted. I was also unsuccessful in my quest to find seamless, tubular fabric (think like a sock) for the shade and so the design was adapted to include a laser-cut aluminum frame to hold the shape of the fabric within the wooden frame. I am looking forward to reattempting this piece using digital fabrication methods to help simplify and speed up the shaping and joining of the wood. So the Andon Table/ Floor lamp is still very much a work in-progress. Stay tuned...
