Architect's Desk Caddy

Description

At the last firm I worked we had commercial systems furniture for our work stations. There wasn't really any dedicated storage for the typical things I would often need in my daily work. This was the inspiration for the Architect's Desk Caddy; a place where I could keep the basics together within easy reach. I first thought about the tools that I used most in my day to day work (besides the computer, of course!): a 12" roll of trace paper, architect and engineer's scales, notepads, pens, markers, and pencils, a calculator, tape dispenser, stapler, scissors, and an assortment of things like paper clips, rubber bands, etc. Then I thought about how to create a clean and simple piece of casework that would keep all of these things organized and handy. The result is the Architect's Desk Caddy. The piece is made from local Big Leaf Maple, which can have pretty stunning grain with tiger stripping (unfortunately the pictures don't do it justice), and finished with tung oil. Through and half-blind dovetail joinery are used to fashion the case and the drawer.  And while it's called the "Architect's" Desk Caddy, my guess is that it might come in handy even if you aren't an architect.
