Description
The inspiration for the Burl Swirl Wall Panel came from the swirling patterns of wood grain I observed on a tree's burl while hiking in a nearby forest. I wanted to create a tessellating pattern (one that is able to be repeated or tiled endlessly in all directions without gaps or overlaps) to use in an ornamental wall panel. While this is relatively easy to do with simple patterns, complex, organic patterns are much more challenging to pull off in a convincing and pleasing way. After many, many design iterations I finally felt ready for the next step: milling a full size model in wood. From the model a rubber mold was made. Now I am in the skills, materials, and tools gathering phase as I gear up to attempt casting my first glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) panel. Wish me luck and check back soon for the finished product...
